What are Cannabis Concentrates?

Cannabis, or marijuana plants, contain many chemical substances called cannabinoids and terpenes that give each variety its own particular aromas, flavors, and physical effects. Concentrates eliminate the plant material and other undesirable elements of the plant and keep the most beneficial compounds: terpenes and cannabinoids. The resulting concentrated forms of cannabis are used in hundreds of products for a variety of uses.

Depending on the form of concentrate you choose, there are several ways to consume or administer them. You may want to use oil concentrates exclusively. They may also be used in conjunction with the flower form of marijuana to increase the effects.

Are There Different Kinds of Concentrates?

There are distinct types of cannabis concentrates. They differ by texture, and the consistency determines how they can be most effectively administered. The most common forms are oils, budder, and wax. Potency can vary depending on the form. Some can contain over 80% THC concentrate.

Hash and hash oils have been used since ancient times. They can be vaped, eaten, sprinkled onto the flower buds and smoked, or rubbed onto the skin. Hash can come in many different formats and colors. From dark brown to blonde in color and formats ranging from traditional pressed hashes, sand-like granular water hash, to softer more malleable temple balls, they are strong and fragrant. Hash oils come in a variety of purity, translucency, textures, and colors, with some looking like molasses and others more like honey. Hash and hash oils are much more concentrated with cannabinoids than plain flower.
Budder, also sometimes referred to as Badder or Batter, is a form of concentrate that has a consistency similar to butter. This type of cannabis concentrate can take the form of shatter, a translucent concentrate that is named for its glass-like appearance and texture, or when whipped, it takes on the soft solid texture of butter. These are considered to be purer than hash when taken into the lungs as they contain less organic material.

Waxes or dabs can vary in texture from a gel consistency to a firm wax. They not only vary by appearance but in melting points and THC wax prices. A special device must heat dabs or waxes for consumption. When used in conjunction with an extract pipe, they deliver a more potent dosage of beneficial compounds like THC than a conventional pipe. Some also use dab extract to supplement joints, bowls or to add into food as an edible.

Why Choose Concentrates?

There are many reasons people may choose to use concentrates over smoking cannabis in a pipe or joint. Concentrates can provide many benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Options – Some consumers may prefer not to smoke flower to get the beneficial effects of terpenes and cannabinoids.
  • Potency – Cannabis concentrates deliver more of the essential compounds than other forms. You can do more with less.
  • Discretion – The devices for smoking concentrates don’t resemble typical marijuana pipes, and the smoke and odor from vaporizing them are minimal.
  • Flavor – Removing the unnecessary and unpleasant organic materials like chlorophyll allows the natural flavors and aromas of the terpenes to shine through.
