The Apothecarium Opens Large New Castro Dispensary and Appoints Dr. Floyd Huen as its First Medical Advisor; Adds Tours for Physicians

The Apothecarium Opens Large New Castro Dispensary and Appoints Dr. Floyd Huen as its First Medical Advisor; Adds Tours for Physicians

San Francisco, October 11, 2016 -- The Apothecarium, a professional medical cannabis

dispensary, today officially opens its new 5,000 square foot dispensary in San Francisco’s

Castro neighborhood. Supervisor Scott Wiener will be speak at the event, to recognize the

dispensary’s service to neighborhood patients and the $335,000 dollars the organization has

donated to local nonprofits since it opened in 2011. The Apothecarium also announced it has

appointed Dr. Floyd Huen, a well-known local physician, as the organization’s first medical

advisor. Dr. Huen, a former medical director of Oakland’s Highland Hospital and Over Sixties

Health Clinic, will help oversee staff training of The Apothecarium’s patient consultants and

outreach to the medical community. As part of that effort, The Apothecarium announced a

program of regularly scheduled tours of their Castro dispensary for physicians and other

healthcare professionals.

“The Apothecarium is known for serving seniors, cancer patients and others with serious

medical conditions,” said Ryan Hudson, executive director of The Apothecarium. “We’re the

dispensary where oncologists send their chemotherapy patients. That’s why we’re so excited to

bring Dr. Floyd Huen on board as our first Medical Advisor. He was one of the first mainstream

physicians in California to legally prescribe medical marijuana to patients suffering from serious

conditions. Everyday people come into our dispensary who’ve just received a troubling

diagnosis or begun treatment. We want them to feel welcome, safe, and empowered to select

the right medication for their needs.”

Dr. Huen, who is board certified in internal medicine, with a special interest in geriatrics and

diabetes, began prescribing medical cannabis to patients in 1996. He is married to former

Oakland mayor, Jean Quan.

“I have fought for improved medical access for all patients for my entire career,” said Dr. Huen.

“I am excited to join The Apothecarium’s team because of their serious focus on patient care

and excellent reputation. We want The Apothecarium’s dispensaries to be places where

everyone feels welcome. We also want physicians to feel comfortable recommending the

dispensary to their patients. In addition, I believe it’s important that Asian Pacific Americans and

other minorities take positions of leadership within the cannabis business community to bring

greater diversity to the industry.”

Beginning Thursday October 20, The Apothecarium will offer tours of its Castro dispensary to

health professionals. Tours are free to doctors, pharmacists, social workers and others in similar

fields, including students. The monthly tours will be held on the third Thursday of each month,

beginning at 6:30 p.m. They will be conducted by Sara Payan, The Apothecarium’s Director of

Education. Tours last approximately one hour and will provide participants with an

understanding of the patient experience. Participants may reserve their spot on a scheduled

tour -- or request a group tour -- by emailing tours@apothecariumsf.com.

The new dispensary features an open, modern design -- with an exhibit space for local artists, a

comfortable waiting area, and -- coming soon -- a retail area where patients can purchase

accessories for their medicine.

About The Apothecarium

The Apothecarium has long been recognized as one of the nation’s premier medical marijuana

dispensaries. In 2015, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors declared October 1

“Apothecarium Day.” The dispensary is one of the few in California that batch-tests all medicine

for purity. The Apothecarium also offers free access to wellness programs, including weekly

yoga, meditation, anxiety and depression, and veteran and women’s support groups. The

organization also operates a dispensary in Las Vegas and recently received approval to open

new dispensaries in Berkeley and San Francisco’s Marina district. The two new dispensaries

are slated to open in 2017.

The Apothecarium Plans Move To Larger Facility One Half Block Down Market Street

The Apothecarium Plans Move To Larger Facility One Half Block Down Market Street

SAN FRANCISCO, March 10, 2016 -- The Apothecarium, a medical cannabis dispensary in the

Castro neighborhood, today announced plans to move to a larger facility, a few doors down

from its current location at Market and Church. The move will reduce lines and wait times for

patients at the popular dispensary by allowing the organization to hire additional patient

consultants. The Apothecarium is currently housed in a storefront at 2095 Market St. The

proposed new location, at 2029 Market Street, is a vacant space that previously housed

Shanghai Chinese Restaurant, approximately half a block away.

Founded in 2011, The Apothecarium offers member-patients lab-tested medical cannabis in an

upscale environment with assistance from professional patient consultants. Known for its

neighborhood philanthropy, The Apothecarium has given away more than $300,000 to

community-minded groups such as Castro/Eureka Valley Foundation, Equality California,

LYRIC, Lyon-Martin Health services, Larkin St. Youth Center, PAWS (Pets are Wonderful

Support), SF Pride, SF Aids Foundation, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, AIDS Emergency

Fund, Rooms that Rock4Chemo, Maitri Compassionate Care and many more.

“The Castro is our home and we are delighted we have found a new, larger space so close by --

no easy feat in San Francisco’s current real estate market,” said Ryan Hudson, co-founder and

executive director of The Apothecarium. “We want to assure patients who depend on us for

safe, lab-tested medicine, that we will be continue to operate in the Castro. Our new location will

allow us room to hire more patient consultants to better serve patients in a modern, comfortable

space.”

The new location is subject to approval by the San Francisco Planning Commission. The

Apothecarium has already received initial confirmation from the city that the proposed location

meets the legal requirements for a medical cannabis dispensary. The Apothecarium hopes to be

operating in their new location by the third quarter of 2016.

In addition to high-quality medication, the Apothecarium offers free access to wellness

programs, including weekly yoga, meditation, anxiety and depression, and veteran and women’s

support groups. These groups reinforce healthy lifestyles and encourage positive behaviors to

mitigate stress and create connection. The additional space may allow the dispensary to host

some of those programs on site, instead of in a nearby church common room.

Response from community leaders and neighbors to news of the move has been positive:

Steve Adams, Past Commissioner, San Francisco Small Business Commission said, “It’s

great to see a small business born-and-bred in the Castro thriving and in need of a larger space.

The leaders of The Apothecarium don’t just talk about community - they give their time and

money to make the neighborhood a better place. I am hard pressed to think of another small

business in the city that has been so generous to their community.”

Alan Beach Nelson, President of the Eureka Valley Neighborhood Association and a

member of The Apothecarium’s Philanthropic Advisory Board said, “As a longtime fundraiser

and advocate for AIDS research, I always recommend The Apothecarium to people with serious

medical conditions who need professional consultations about medical cannabis. The

Apothecarium is truly an asset to the neighborhood and the city. I’m delighted the new space

will allow them to expand their service to patients.”

Daniel Bergerac, President, Castro Merchants and Owner, Mudpuppy’s said, “It’s no surprise

The Apothecarium has been so warmly embraced by the Castro community. They combine

excellent service and an extensive program of community outreach with an upscale retail space.

I can’t wait to see what they do with their new, larger space. I serve with Ryan Hudson,

co-founder of The Apothecarium, on the Board of Castro Merchants. He is one of our most

active and generous members.”

Jeff Bryant, a home-owner who lives directly above the proposed location said, “For four

years The Apothecarium has been a considerate, quiet neighbor down the street. I’m glad they

are filling the empty storefront in my building. I’d much rather have a quiet dispensary here than

a noisy bar or restaurant.”

David Troup, Board Member, Duboce Triangle Neighborhood Association and a member

of The Apothecarium’s Philanthropic Advisory Board said, “One of the reasons The

Apothecarium is so popular in the Castro is that so many of their employees live in

neighborhood. The majority of their employees are LGBT -- so they truly represent the

community they serve. I’m so glad they are staying in the neighborhood.”

Scott Wiener, San Francisco Board of Supervisors Member for District 8 said, “The

Apothecarium is well known in the neighborhood for being a community-minded organization

that gives back to the neighborhood. In October, I was proud to sponsor a Board of Supervisors

resolution congratulating the Apothecarium on its fourth anniversary and its exemplary service

to patients. The Castro has long been supportive of medical marijuana. When Prop 215 passed,

legalizing medical cannabis, the measure received more than 91% support in the Castro and

Upper Market. I expect the Apothecarium's move to a new location will be met with broad

community support.”

The Apothecarium To Open High-End Medical Cannabis Dispensary in Las Vegas

“Moms and Grandmothers Welcome” at Elegant Dispensary Offering Organically Grown

Medicine

LAS VEGAS, February 19, 2016 -- The Apothecarium, a medical cannabis company based in

San Francisco, announced it has joined with local partners to open a Las Vegas location, which

will begin serving patients on Saturday, February 20th. This will be the second location for The

Apothecarium, which has operated a widely-respected medical cannabis dispensary in San

Francisco since 2011. The establishment is known for providing patients with excellent service

in an upscale environment. The Las Vegas dispensary will be housed in a 3,000 square foot

space, featuring rotating art exhibits, located at 7885 West Sahara Avenue, near the corner of

South Buffalo Drive.

“The Apothecarium is the dispensary where you can feel comfortable sending your mom or your

grandmother,” said Ryan Hudson, co-founder and executive director of The Apothecarium.

“Physicians often send us patients who are dealing with serious medical issues such as cancer,

because we offer our members in-depth consultations from professional staffers.”

The Apothecarium will offer classes and outreach tailored to seniors, veterans, cancer survivors

and other cannabis patients. The medicine will include marijuana grown using organic,

sustainable methods and edibles made by award-winning chefs.

“I visited the Apothecarium’s northern California location last year, and it was very interesting to

see what a professional operation it is,” said Dina Titus, United States Representative for

Nevada’s District 1. “It’s agribusiness. It’s science. It’s health. The people working there had

Masters Degrees in Public Health and Chemistry. And as a result of their security

improvements, the neighborhood had improved. I’m pleased to welcome The Apothecarium to

District 1 and I look forward to working with them to serve the needs of southern Nevadans.”

Since opening in 2011 in San Francisco, The Apothecarium has served 50,000

member-patients, approximately 30 percent of whom are over the age of 55. During that time,

the dispensary has never had a single police incident and has been warmly embraced by its

neighbors. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors even declared October 1, 2015,

“Apothecarium Day” in honor of the dispensary’s service to patients and the community.

“Las Vegas offers the opportunity to experience the world’s finest institutions: the Eiffel Tower,

the New York skyline, world-class restaurants and now The Apothecarium, too,” said Foster

Boone, general manager, The Apothecarium Las Vegas. “We welcome first-time cannabis

patients, seniors, out-of-state visitors with valid physician recommendations, and working

professionals looking for top-quality medicine from friendly, knowledgeable patient consultants.”

The Apothecarium Las Vegas is co-owned by a group of Nevada-based investors and the

California-based founders of The Apothecarium.
