What are Cannabis Edibles?

What do you get when you combine culinary talents with expertise in marijuana extracts?

Delicious edibles and drinks that offer all the same beneficial qualities that you get from smoking, but in a discreet and portable form. Now that many states have legalized cannabis products, edibles have become a popular way for people who may never have tried them before, and to do so without the health concerns of smoking.

Dispensary edibles can contain the active cannabinoids THC, CBD, or both. Other newly popular cannabinoid additions to marijuana edibles may include THCa, THCV,  or CBN. Infused edibles include all types of food and drinks, from sweet to savory:

  • Chocolate & Candies – Edible sweets can come in chocolate bars, truffles, gummies, mints, hard candy, marshmallows and much more.
  • Cookies – Who doesn’t love an artisan cookie? When you can feel relaxed, and relieved after having one, that’s even better.
  • Popcorn & Crackers – Having your dose of cannabis couldn’t be more convenient than when you are also satisfying your savory craving or having a quick snack.
  • Capsules – Ratios of THC to CBD and other cannabinoids are conveniently packaged in swallowable capsules for those who wish to consume but do so without tasting the cannabis or other ingredients.

What are Cannabis Drinks?

A great alternative to alcoholic cocktails, drinks infused with marijuana concentrates create a nice lift and can contain both THC and CBD. From fizzy drinks to coffees, non-alcoholic beers, wines and teas- there is a drink for every taste. Faster acting than edibles, you will feel these products within 30-60 minutes and the effects last from 1-2 hours.

  • Coffees & Teas – Surprisingly, depending on the blend and THC level, you can have the stimulation of caffeine coexist beautifully with a mellow high.  You can also find teas without caffeine as well.
  • Carbonated Drinks – From high dose to microdosing, if you are more into soft drinks than coffee, you can get the same experience as cannabis coffee with cannabis sodas.
  • Non-alcoholic Wines & Beers – These drinks have the alcohol removed, but still create a nice relaxed lift in a familiar format.

What are Sublinguals?

Held under the tongue or between the cheek and gum, sublinguals create fast acting effects by entering the bloodstream through the mucous membranes. Expect to feel effects within 15-20 minutes and for them to last between 3-4 hours:

  • Tinctures – Tinctures have various ratios of cannabinoids, making them versatile and approachable for anyone. They are lower in calories than other edibles and an easy way to quickly and discreetly ingest cannabis. Hold them under your tongue for 30-40 seconds before swallowing for best effects. Can be added to foods or drink as well.

  • Mints – Available in many different cannabinoid combinations and dosages, these can be chewed like a regular edible or dissolved under the tongue or between the cheek and gum for faster effects.

  • Strips– These are made of edible film like breath strips and are also available in many different cannabinoid combinations and dosages. They are dissolved under the tongue or between the cheek and gum.

The list is not exclusive. If you can imagine a food or drink, it can probably be made with cannabis extract. Have fun trying the different concoctions that ingenious gastronomes with an appreciation for Cannabis have perfected.

Are the Effects of Edibles Different From Smoking?

The therapeutic and psychoactive effects of smoking marijuana are almost immediate. However, it can take anywhere from 20-45 minutes or up to three hours to take effect with edibles. While it may take longer, the results of ingesting edibles and the way your body metabolizes the cannabis can be much different than smoking.

Reactions to cannabis edibles last much longer than smoking. However, microdosing (5 milligrams of THC or less), which is a common formula used in many edibles, can have a gentle, to low psychoactive effect. Effects could last from three to eight hours. Because of the long lasting effects of edibles, slow and low is always the way to go until you figure out what your optimal amount of consumption may be.

Can You Have Too Many Edibles?

If you are new to cannabis, you’ll have to experiment to see what works best for you. Many things, such as quality, potency, dosage, and metabolism, can affect how different people react. We recommend that you try the edibles sparingly at first and assess how you respond to them. When trying edibles for the first time, a good rule of thumb is to start with 2-5 milligram of THC. Wait at least two to three hours and increase the dosage in 5 milligram increments to see what works best for you.

It can be tempting to overindulge in the delicious treats or to mistakenly think it isn’t working. But just like alcohol, unfortunately, you can have too much leading to anxiety, rapid heart rate, or an extreme sedative effect called “couch-lock”. Take your time, wait a few hours, and you will be rewarded for your patience.
